An old island's progress can be reset by clicking the gear icon in the menu and then agreeing to reset. Sometimes a glitch will send you to the map or somewhere else after reseting the island, but this seems to be avoidable by saving your game beforehand. Go to the common room, then use the Time Device and select a random date, finally press the button. This will do a glitch where go to earlier version of Poptropica.
